School in Ovenden, Halifax celebrated their first season’s harvest in their
new Culture Club Garden, run by extended learning teacher Claire Wade.
The garden party included home baked cakes by the pupils and freshly
harvested potatoes, lettuces and coriander for sale to the guests.
There was no shortage of offers for tours around the garden that consisted
of raised vegetable beds, herb patch, pond and wildlife garden. ‘The herbs
are great to touch and smell’ said one of the children. |
 |
The ATC’s role in all this
was providing the plan for the garden along with contacts for materials and
a month-by-month guide to building and planting the garden. Also SUSchool,
based at the ATC, has run a number of workshops concerning food miles and
the benefits of eating local food.

|
Through a lot
of work by pupils, teachers and parents the garden has been completed in a
staggering 4 months. The results are the pride of everyone at the school.
One child when asked what they like best about the garden, said ‘Eating it’. |

|
The aim was to fully involve pupils
in the production of fruit, vegetables, cut flowers, etc. For this reason,
the plan is clear and easily understood.
The Garden will be used as a
resource during school term time only. The choice of plants reflect this
e.g. quick growing crops, cut-and-come-again and all year round harvest,
etc. and survival of the plants over the summer holidays is taken into
account. |
